So, Newsweek is reporting that Harry Reid is considering stripping Joe Lieberman of his senate committee chair position as what I gather is punishment for supporting John McCain and spurning the party that gave birth to his Senate career.
Reid, in a sternly worded statement after the 45-minute meeting, said no official decisions have been made. But an aide to the Nevada Democrat said Reid was leaning toward removing Lieberman as chairman of the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee.
Know what? I don't like it. I don't like this idea of collective punishment of McCain supporters. I don't respect Joe Lieberman's flip floppery, but let's also remember he isn't ACTUALLY a Dem anymore. He lost the Democratic nomination in his home state and had to run as an independent. He's always been a toe-the-middle-line Democrat, often crossing the aisle, and now he's actually officially an independent. So removing him for essentially no other reason other than "eff you, Joe - we won, your guy lost and now you can suck on it" smells to me like exactly the sort of things Democrats whined about Republicans doing years ago.
Be gracious in victory, Harry. Act like you've been there. Leave it alone.

I disagree to a certain extent. They guy didn't just campaign for McCain, he said he feared for America's survival under an Obama presidency. You sacrifice good will with statements like that. He needs to be held accountable for his own actions.
Keep in mind that as an Independant, Lieberman normally wouldn't have any claim to a chairmanship; he was allowed to keep the powerful slot as a gesture of good will even though he went against the best interest of the party by running as an independant after losing the democratic primary fair and square. He took a second bite at the apple, if you will.
But what he has done since then, as DP has pointed out, is beyond the pale. It's bad enough to support the Republican nominee, but to then not only accept a prime time speaking slot at the Republican convention like Zell "Benedict Arnold" Miller, but to actually go so far as to suggest that the Democratic nominee is a danger to our country is shocking.
Don't forget that Lieberman was also the first Senator to come out and point his holier than thou finger at President Clinton over his affair with Monica the Intern. I will never forgive him for that betrayal either (I wonder what his thoughts are on McCain cheating on his first wife with Cindy are, btw). Hell, I'm getting a bj from one of our Potatoe interns as we speak and I don't like people who make a big deal out of it.
Bottom line: the guy is a traitor to the party and the powerful committee chairmanship should go to someone who isn't.
I'm going to side with your colleagues Pat. The man is a cretin. It would be a different matter if we weren't talking about the chairmanship of Homeland Security, especially in light of the comment that defective pants pointed it out. I'm all for hiding him in a corner.
